Minutes of May meeting

These are unapproved minutues of meeting. For any changes see future minutes.

Yarmouth Art Society

Minutes of May 25, 2019 Meeting

Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Yarmouth

The meeting was called to order at 1:00 pm.

Minutes of the April 27, 2019 meeting were approved as read.

Treasurer’s report for the period from March 23 to May 25, 2019, opening balance of $3839.85 and total balance forward of $3508.70. This balance includes $474.58 which is the remaining grant money for the Garson Sisters project and $1863.24 which is the reserve for 4 Ateliers so the actual YAS balance is $1170.88.

New Business:

Sara Corning project: Margriet will send an e-mail to YAS members to determine how many will participate in this art show which will take place during the month of September. September 14-15 weekend will be the unveiling of the Sara Corning statue on the Museum property.

Old business:

Shows at the Museum: There is no change to the Fall shows at the Museum. First show is YAS members only, second show is YAS members with rug hookers and “Winter” is the theme.

Art Classes for Children: Virginia talked about this partnership between the AGNS and YAS which will take place from August 13 to 16, for 3 hours each morning. This will be for children aged 8 to 12, though this is flexible. Tentative revenues are $475 from Garson show reserve and $40 from each of 10 children participating for a total of $875.00. Expenses include instructor fees $600, rent for room at AGNS $150, extra art supplies $75, poster $50, for a total of $875.00. Virginia believes we should offer assistance to children to help cover the fee if needed, and that the activities should be limited to drawing, painting and print making. It was proposed and accepted that Kelliann be the art teacher and that other YAS members may be needed as volunteer helpers.

Art Work at Hospital: June 4 at 12:00 noon there will be a meeting with representatives of YAS, Conseil des arts de la Baie and the Par en Bas art group with committee members of the hospital art project.

YAS Networking: A networking group representing the 3 art groups has already met and all 3 are very interested in the art work at the hospital project. Participating artists should be members of one of the art groups and the art work can be any size and any type as long as it can be properly hung. The hospital will not be responsible for any loss of art work. Each art group will have a contact person whom the hospital will contact when an item is sold. The networking group will meet again on June 11 to discuss this further.

Other: Bill Curry advised that the Art by the Bay activity has been cancelled due to lack of interest. Cecil Day said there was one spot left in the cyanotype workshop with Bonnie Baker on June 6 and 8 if anyone is interested. June 14 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm will be the opening reception of Yarmouth Waterfront Gallery. Sue Amon said her solo show at the YARC has been changed to the month of July with an opening reception on July 5 from 6:00 till 8:00 pm.

Round table: We had an enjoyable round table talk.

Next meeting will be June 29 at 1 pm at the AGNS.

Respectfully submitted,

Noella DeMille

Project description: “One Hue, Many Colors”
Using the textbook Color, A Love Story as
a color companion, this workshop is an
introduction to understanding and using color.
The first few chapters of the book cover concepts
like: the properties of color; how to mix colors;
how to apply the paint; how to develop a design.
Through discussions, demonstrations and handson
exercises, participants will learn about and
utilize a “process.” Using elements painted by the
participants, they will be guided in designing and
creating a finished collage that utilizes these
concepts and explores the possibilities of a
simple color scheme (even monochromatic).
Guided critiques will occur during the work
session to give participants opportunity to give
each other feedback.
Medium: Acrylic paint on canvas paper
You must register and a materials list will be
provided.
Bio: Deborah Cherry Mosch is an artist and an
educator living in Savannah, Georgia, where she
has taught at the Savannah College of Art and
Design for more than twenty-five years. When
she isn’t teaching she is creating and studying all
things color and design. Having been a painter
most of her life, she started designing jewelry as
a natural extension of her most recent abstract
paintings which are based upon her “to-do lists.”
Her materials for the jewelry allow texture
for added depth and movement, and vary in
nature; she typically uses utilitarian materials,
vintage beads, and semi-precious stones together
to create each unique design. More recently she
started creating her drawings digitally, allowing
her to make immediate transformations in design
and color. The formal elements of the work rely
upon color to create atmosphere, economy and
rhythm of design.

YAS to participate in Sara Corning events

At our April meeting Wendy Majestic talked about the Sara Corning project. This is what we learned from her about Sara:

Sara Corning was born in Chegoggin in 1872. She studied in the U.S. and was a nurse who became known for her nursing and humanitarian work,  saving thousands of Greek, Armenian and Assyrian orphans and refugees. After assisting during the aftermath of the Halifax explosion,  Sara joined the Near East Relief effort, working mainly with orphans providing housing and emphasizing education.  The Sara Corning Centre for Genocide Education in Toronto was named in her honor in 2011. Sara returned to Chegoggin when she retired and she died in 1969 at the age of 97. On the weekend of September 14-15 a statue of Sara will be unveiled on the Yarmouth County Museum property, a play about her life will be presented  at Th’YARC and there will be other activities.
We decided to have an  art exhibit during the month of September with art work inspired by Sara or her life’s work or the places where she has been.
The work will be on display at the Holy Trinity Hall.
If you want to know more about Sara, you can Google. You will find a lot of information and pictures on the internet.
This is a good way to contribute to the activities in September and an excellent chance to show your work to a lot of visitors.
